Margret Mahy Play Ground

Introduction on Thursday the 20th of May Tumu Hub  went to the  Margaret Mahy

Margaret is a family playground and we also went to Victoria Square and the Waka. In Victoria Square we looked at Statue’s and Pou . Then we got to draw the Pou’s. The Pou’s are carved wooden posts, and they have important Maori people carved into them.

My favourite part of the trip was paddling on the Waka.  The Waka is a wooden boat that the Maori used to collect food such as Tuna (eels), from the Avon River.  The waka was really fast.

Something I learnt was that the mats dotted along the path next to the Avon River are special to the Moari culture.  They show Maori patterns and go much deeper into the ground than they appear.

The thing I found the most interesting was the etched concrete around the path that goes through the Margaret Mahy playground. The etchings represent the special things such as animals and plants that mean alot to the Moari culture.  They are very cool.

This trip has helped me with my PBL because I would like to bring the idea of etched patterns into concrete into the playground. have you been to Margaret Mahy?
